Oil Painting Restoration – Extremely Yellowed Varnish
Varnish is a very important part of the preservation of oil and acrylic paintings. Early varnishes, however, have a tendency to turn yellow and brittle with age. The process is so slow, you may not even realize it has happened until the old varnish is removed and you see the original colors hidden underneath.
The old varnish is first painstakingly removed by our master restorer one square inch at a time utilizing specific solvents. The painting is then cleaned, again, one square inch at a time, before being conditioned to bring the oil paint back to its original state. A new UV filtering, non-yellowing varnish is then applied to protect and enhance the painting.
